I asked Pepper what she wanted to do next to keep her mind off of what happened when Lydia stormed in at the end of the rehearsal gone wrong. Even though it was Ms. Clark’s idea, I knew Pep’s sister would go ape shit about us standing as the bride and groom. That’s why I’d blocked Lydia’s rampage and had given my fake girlfriend a moment to get her bearings.

Although after brushing my lips over Pep’s soft ones, I did need to find mine too. I’m unsure if I’m a fool for waiting or if I should slide the wedding planner a Benjamin. I mean, who gets a first kiss as memorable as ours? Rehearsal or not, I slid a ring on Pep’s finger. If that doesn’t say special story behind how we got together, I’m not sure what does.

As soon as we connected, it took every ounce of willpower to keep the kiss from becoming indecent. For a second, I’d forgotten we had witnesses and all about Pepper cautioning me that the Corbins were traditional in their approach to public displays of affection.

I’d venture to say they actually conserve any loving emotions altogether. It doesn’t seem to me Pep gets a modicum of their devotion, which is a damn shame. Yet Dagmar and Ingram are the ones missing out. Fuck Lydia. I won’t give that bitch the benefit of the doubt. Every move she makes is premeditated, and she doesn’t deserve to have a sister as forgiving as Pepper. There’s a certain perfection in not blaming others for what’s falling apart in your life. Pep’s probably done the pick-yourself-up-and-dust-yourself-off routine more times than she’s admitted. Transcendence doesn’t always stop the sting, though does it?

Not when you want to feel loved by someone who is important to you.

Pacing down the hall from the restroom, Pep’s big brown eyes finally met mine and I saw a flash of broken soul. Her shy, hesitant response was all I needed to know about her skepticism and the suspicion that I’d continue being kind to her. I couldn’t give her a second chance to change her mind about The Sand Bar, even though she acted as if all she wanted to do was go back to the cabin and pull the covers over her head.

I’m glad the past hour of us slurping frozen cocktails and chowing down on cheese fries has cheered her up. It has me certain we’ll be doing this again on many Friday nights at The Grille once Pep and I are home.

I like the ease of being with her and that she’s the exact opposite of girls who put on airs. And those little incidents she has—the humorous ones when her nerves get the best of her and it’s akin to the slapstick of a Rebel Wilson movie early in her acting career? They are worth a million laughs, but in a good way since I’ll be the one to hug and comfort her. The thing I like best about
